NYC Food Guy Gone For The Weekend, 24 Hour “Kool Bloo” Open for Takeout & Delivery in East Village, A Mission for NYC Food Guy’s Readers

Kool Bloo, a small chain of grease pits throughout Manhattan, just opened the 24 hour take out/delivery area of their new East Village location on 12th Street just off Avenue A.  Kool Bloo has the potential to become the go to late night dining spot once the main room opens but there’s two problems: 1) Everything is overpriced 2) Their menu is overwhelmingly large.  I attempted to play it safe by ordering something low key, but that didn’t prevent a disappointing experience. I ordered a chicken burger, which I thought would be grilled but instead arrived breaded and fried, on a roll with bacon, lettuce, tomato, and melted jack cheese.  I also picked up an order of seasoned curly fries.  Read on to find out where things went wrong…

NYC Best Diner: Stick with Ukrainian Classics at Veselka

There are certain dining experiences that just make you feel like a New Yorker. Sitting at Veselka’s counter sipping coffee and dipping chalah into a bowl of soup exemplifies this notion 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Originally opened as a candy store in the mainly Ukrainian East Village of the 1950s, “Veselka,” Ukrainian for “rainbow,” has been spreading cheer amidst an ever-changing neighborhood by sticking to its roots: authentic and affordable Ukrainian food in an unhurried atmosphere.

NYC Best Wings, Harlem Edition: Just Wingin It’s “Super Nova” Sauce Burns Brightest

The quest for NYC’s best wings continues! For this post I joined Eating In Translation’s Dave Cook in Harlem where we followed his route from 110th street to 145th street trying wings at three take out spots.  This meant passing on soul food stalwarts Amy Ruth’s and Sylvia’s, but fear not, we’ll tackle those two on another adventure.  Of the 5 varieties of wings sampled, only one truly soared. Read on to learn which wings wowed and where you can find a place with 17 homemade sauce flavors.

NYC Tacos: Don’t Try To Be Healthy at Pinche Taqueria, Order Nachos Instead

Sometimes it doesn’t pay to try and eat healthy.  After a greasy late night meal my heart was begging for something unfried at lunch the next day.  I hadn’t eaten at Pinche Taqueria’s second NYC outpost on Lafayette and Bleecker, so I decided to stop in for a Taco Salad, and of course, an al pastor taco.  Good thing my friend ordered nachos because it was the chips and melted cheese that saved the meal.  Don’t forget, this location of Pinche Taqueria is open until 4AM Wednesday through Saturday.

Long Island’s Best Food: Gino’s Pizza & Steiner’s Pastry Shop in Manhasset

My culinary conquests are mainly focused on NYC but we can’t forget about the island to the east, Long Island, where there’s more great food than people realize.   NYC Food Guy is here to make your sojourns outside the city more enjoyable by shedding light on Long Island’s best food.   This post focuses on one block in Manhasset, walking distance from the LIRR station, where Gino’s Pizzeria and Steiner’s Pastry Shop are putting the majority of Manhattan’s slice joints and bakeries to shame.

NYC Chinese Food: $3 Scallion Pancakes Steal The Spotlight at Mee Noodle Shop

We came for the noodle soup, we left praising the scallion pancakes.  Mee Noodle Shop on 2nd Avenue near 30th street may have the best prices outside of Chinatown, but at this meal neither noodle soup with meat dumplings or General Tso’s chicken beat the heaping $3 pile of greasy, flaky and freshly fried scallion pancakes.  Read on for more scallion pancake porn and to find out why the noodles and General Tso’s fell short…

East Village Bakery: Deciphering Deliciousness at Pinisi Bakery

NYC Wings: A 2nd Try of Lansdowne Road Proves Scruffy Duffy’s Wings Are Really Gone

A 2nd attempt at rediscovering the magic of Scruffy Duffy’s Buffalo Wings at widowed sister bar Lansdowne Road has failed.  On my initial visit, I ordered the wings hot and was disappointed by the crusty sauce and dried out wings.  On my second visit, I ordered the wings medium but the result is what you see below: under-sauced, dried out wings.  They weren’t as dry as the hot wings, but the sauce was vinegary and generic.  It’s with great sadness that we say goodbye to the fiery, red pepper flake-studded hot sauce that made the original Scruffy Duffy’s so good.

NYC Cheese Steaks: Wogie’s Doesn’t Take the Crown, But There’s Many Reasons to Return
