Taco Bell’s Cheesy Beefy Melt is a disaster

by

Cheesy Beefy Melt. Nothing misleading about that. Unless you’re eating at the Taco Bell in NYC’s Penn Station or watching the commercial below. Despite the absurdly cheesy (no pun intended) melted cheese equals love campaign, the advertisements were typically false, there was no thinking outside the bun. It looked nothing like the deliciously heart-stopping photo below. It was an absolute disaster.

Looks okay from the outside…

Terrible on the inside.

There’s barely any cheesey and even less melty.  The most prevalent ingredient was sour cream, never a good sign. This was the most poorly prepared food item I’ve ever eaten at Taco Bell and in all honesty, even if it was cheesy and melty, I don’t see how this could be delicious. It’s an undercooked mess. What’s it needs is a little time inside the sandwich press aka Grilled Stuft Burrito treatment. Alas, Taco Bell has not made this upgrade and thankfully I’m pretty sure they’re no longer offering this mess of beef, sour cream, and cheese. But if they bring it back like the heralded Cheesy Gordita Crunch, stay away.

    have fun at Perilla tomorrow.

  2. Dan Says:

p.s. i’d call ahead to make sure they’re open. according to their website http://www.perillanyc.com/index.php?page=contact&cont=information they’re only open for “brunch” saturdays and sundays.

    Dan,

Ha. It’s all for the love of the game. After seeing that commercial as many times as I did, I had to try it.

Thanks for the perilla info. We’ll adjust appropriately.

Whenever Taco Bell has a new product, I am always reminded of this article from the Onion a decade ago:

You are a good man… brave too.

And I saw Adam’s post on AHT about y’all’s burger trip at Brooklyn Diner. Good stuff man!

    Tony,

Great link. Onion is hilarious. T-Bell is a joke but at 3AM in the college days, it was a godsend. I’d rather eat T-Bell than Subway. The Cheesy Gordita Crunch is pretty damn tasty. I try to stay away from fast food, however, unless there’s some new intriguing product e.g. the Wendy’s Spicy Baconator, which was truly painful. What are your thoughts? Are you a T-Bell/fast food fan?

    Danny,

Thanks dude. Like I told Dan above, for the love of the game. Don’t think I forgot about our run to Artichoke and East Village food tour part 2.

  7. Timothy Allen Says:

I totally agree about the Cheesy Beefy Melt. And not only is sour cream the most prevalent, it’s not even that-good of sour cream to begin with.

The pictures in food ads are usually taken at the Fantasy Island store locations, but this one is especially silly. Good Lord, look at that thing. Ha!

Btw NYCFG, Taco Bell has just launched a new value menu, with .79 .89 and .99 cent items. They have added a special page on their website with details.

    Mr. Allen,

Glad to hear I’m not the only one who was totally disappointed by the Cheesy Beefy Melt. Obviously the commercials for it were a huge jump from reality but I was still intrigued.

The only menu item truly worth clamoring for at TBell is the Cheesy Gordita Crunch. Your thoughts?

What’s your go to meal at Taco Bell?

Your site is awesome by the way, have you seen my write up on the Wendy’s Spicy Baconator?
